How an Educational Advocate Can Help Your Child Get the Support They Deserve

As the parent of a special needs child, it can be hard to know exactly what your child needs when it comes to accommodation at their school. Talking with an educational consultant can help you to understand the specific supports that would benefit your child in the classroom. If you're not familiar with the special education system in your child's school, it can be hard to know what to ask for when you're meeting with their caseworker or teacher.

An educational consultant or advocate can help your child get everything that they need from their school. Often, simple accommodations can make a world of difference when it comes to your child's ability to focus on their school work. An educational advocate may suggest talking to your child's caseworker about providing your child with preferential seating, extended time to complete assignments, specific behavioral interventions, and more. Your educational advocate will work with you to understand exactly what your child needs to succeed, and will help you understand how to fight for your child so that they can thrive in the classroom and beyond.

If you're considering reaching out to an educational advocate for help, it's smart to do so as soon as possible. Developing IEPs for children who receive special education services can take time, and it's smart to reach out as soon as you believe that your child might benefit from some extra support in the classroom. Keep a log of the issues that you notice with your child at school, as this information will be helpful to their educational advocate in developing a list of potential support options that could help your child succeed.
